Victoria Wendt,
Therapeutic Recreation
Student

biography.

My name is Victoria Wendt, and I am a student at Central Michigan University. I am majoring in Therapeutic Recreation (TR) with a minor in Disability Studies and Community Inclusion (DSCI).

Ever since I can remember, I have always been passionate about the disability community. So, when it came down to deciding what I wanted to do with my life, I knew I wanted to make a difference in something bigger than myself. Following my senior year of high school, I worked at a camp for people with disabilities. Through that job, I found my passion... but I didn't know I could make it into a career. After talking with the director of that camp, I discovered Therapeutic Recreation; defined as 'improving ones quality of life through play'. I immediately signed TR as my major once I arrived at CMU that fall.

Although I was happy with TR as my major, I found out that there was another field of study that I could have chosen had I gone to another school: Disability Studies. CMU did not offer Disability Studies, so I gave up on that idea very quickly. However, nearing the end of my junior year, it was shared with me that CMU was working on creating a minor, Disability Studies and Community Inclusion. Without hesitation, I began taking the courses that would be required in hopes that the minor would be signable before I graduated. Lucky for me, it was. My senior year of college, in my last semester of classes, I signed DSCI as my minor.

In tribute to my minor, this page holds my final portfolio. A combination of the work I have done through my studies on disability and community inclusion. I hope to educate, and share the knowledge I have learned along the way.
